Mathematics Curriculum (Curriculum Designer: Kim McGovern)

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have  conceptional understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to problems.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and applying logical thinking to a derive the correct stategy to answer a question.
  • solving problems by applying their mathematics to a varity of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simplier steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

We have also devised a whole school calculation policy that teachers follow rigidly to ensure consistency in methods across the school. We have also devised a fraction, decimal and percentage policy to ensure consistency in calculations across the school.

All year groups have a non-negotiables list for all mathematical number areas so that teachers know where the endpoint is for their teaching and what each child should know.

In Nursery we use Development Matters, in EYFS and Year 1 we use "White Rose Maths." From Year 2 to Year 6 the mathematics leader has written bespoke plans for the Year groups closely follwing the National Curriculum.

Children are tested each week for aritmetic and tables. The children are also assessed half-termly in special assessment tests in aritmetic and tables. The children are also assessed termly with NFER tests.

Please read the Mathematics Long Term Plan (LTP) which details the teaching of Mathematics thoughout the school.

Each unit is accompanied by a Knowledge Mat (click on the curriculum tab). This gives the key learning and vocab that your child is expected to know at the end of the unit.
