History Curriculum

At St Christopher’s we use the ‘Challenge Curriculum’ and ‘big questions’ to promote historical enquiry, allowing our pupils to investigate, consider, reflect and review events of the past. We investigate the histories of their local community, their city, their country and the wider world to develop their own identities and sense of place, and to build an appreciation of the origins of our diverse society. Pupils from Foundation Stage to Year 6 build an understanding of historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarities, differences, connections and contrasts. We encourage first hand experiences through the use of artefacts and, where possible, field trips to historical sites, museums or specialised workshops.

History in Key Stage 1 focuses on significant people, places and events and the impact of these on British history. There is a great focus on change and how this comes about. Topics covered include the Titanic, Rosa Parks, Toys, Fashion and the Queen’s coronation. Pupils also learn about significant local figures such as Geoff Hurst.

Throughout Key Stage 2 there is a focus on having a sound chronological understanding of British history, beginning with pre-history (the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages). Invaders and settlers are studied through the Roman Invasion of Britain and this continues into Upper Key Stage 2 where we investigate the Viking and Saxon struggle for power. We also look at how crime and punishment has changed over time. Local history is applied in all these topics, whether through artefacts found in the area, significant individuals such as the Black Knight and primary and secondary sources such as the census, personal accounts and photographs; however, our children also carry out in-depth study of the locality during their work on the Victorian era. In addition to British history, KS2 children cover significant aspects of World History, including early civilisations such as the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians. In order to build a deeper appreciation for our local Muslim community and our diverse society, we also study the advances made by the Early Islamic Empire and its influence on the wider world.

Each unit is supported by a knowledge mat which details the key vocab, interesting books and the key knowledge required. These are sent home to parents to help them complete a project before the unit is started.
