Art and Design Curriculum

At St Christopher’s art is very popular with our children. For the third year in succession Art was voted the most popular subject in school. We encourage children’s artistic development from Nursery through to Year 6. We look for links with other subjects to embed children’s learning further.
The Art and Design curriculum has been designed to actively engage and stimulate children’s creativity whilst developing a range of high quality skills. This leads children to become competent and confident in the skills of drawing, painting and sculpture, as well as in using a wide range of techniques and materials. Children are appropriately challenged and supported to ensure they reach their full potential. The broad curriculum has been carefully planned and adapted to compliment topics taught in other areas of the National Curriculum in history, geography and science. Children are also given the experience to go on trips to museums and art galleries to broaden their understanding and experience of the arts.

Our art curriculum follows the National Curriculum for art and is taught in three strands:
• Drawing and painting
• 3D Art which includes sculptures and textiles
• Digital Art
The curriculum also builds progression in three areas of art:
• Portrait
• Landscape
• Line and pattern

Each term learning begins with looking at examples of work by artists so the children can study it in detail. We try and use local artists such as Lowry and Len Grant to illustrate artistic techniques. We also enhance the children’s learning experience by trips to local art galleries and Manchester Art Gallery.
Following a detailed understanding of the artist’s piece of work, pupils have the chance to imitate part of the artwork or the skill demonstrated in the artworks. Once the pupils have developed the confidence and skills to imitate what they have observed and understood, they innovate their own works using and applying the new knowledge and skills taught with freedom.
