Modern Foreign Language (Curriculum Designer & Leader: Diane Diamond/Senor Marquez)

At St Christopher’s we have started to teach Spanish. It is taught by a language specialist teacher. The main weekly focus is taught on a Friday and then this is reinforced in the week by the class teachers and in assemblies.

The children learn Spanish through songs, stories and games. The focus in Year 1 and Year 2 is building the children’s confidence to have a go at speaking Spanish with the correct pronunciation as well as developing vocab. In Key Stage 2 we  follow the objectives of the national curriculum KS2 languages programme of study.

Our main aims in Spanish are that the children:

  • Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding.
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of the words.
  • Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others.
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words.
  • Read a passage carefully and with an understanding of words and phrases.
  • Describe people, places and things and actions orally and in a simple sentence.
